Housing construction increased in Helsinki in January-March 2011. New housing units completed in March numbered 1,100, which was only somewhat below the annual level of 5,000 targeted by the City of Helsinki.

The numbers of new construction permits, units under construction and completed units all grew from the levels a year before. New housing permits granted in the first quarter of 2011 encompass 1,250 units. The number of units comprised in new permits have exceeded one thousand for three consecutive quarters.

The number of housing starts, however, decreased to some extent in the first quarter of 2011, amounting to 805.

Office construction is slow. New starts and buildings under construction were reduced markedly from the levels a year before, and the total floor space comprised in new permits was reduced by 81 percent. The floor space of completed office space was, however, at the average level for the past decade.

The numbers are reported by the City of Helsinki Economic and Planning Centre in latest report on the city economy.
