Helsinki is introducing major urban development projects in Munich

City of Helsinki is introducing several urban development projects in Expo Real 4–6 October. Design will be a central element in the new urban developments as well, says Mr. Hannu Penttilä, Deputy Mayor of City Planning and Real Estate from Helsinki.

The development of shore, port and railway yard areas will radically alter the city during the next decades. These areas of several hundred hectares, together with other major projects, will create 4.5 million m² of new residential floor area and almost 2.5 million m² of business floor area, representing new homes for more than 100 000 people and jobs for tens of thousands, says Penttilä.

EXPO REAL, the International Trade Fair for Commercial Property and Investment, has been held every October since 1998 in Munich Germany.

Beginning on Thursday, 16 February 2012 an exhibition at the Viikki Environment Building will allow visitors to learn more about nature, planning and ecological construction in Viikki. The exhibition will also show how modern methods can reduce the climate impacts of construction and housing.

As a part of Helsinki’s Western Harbour re-development, a new general plan has been proposed for the Hernesaari dockyard area, enabling construction of housing, jobs, recreation and tourism-related services in the area. Cruise ships would have one more quay in addition to the current two quays.
