The start of the Kruunusillat bridge design competition still open

Friday, 11 November, 2011 - 12:28

The starting date of the Kruunusillat (“Crown Bridges”) design competition is still open. The start of the actual competition phase has been delayed due to a complaint made to the Market Court.

The City of Helsinki has given it’s counterword to the Market Court in November 2, 2011 and the process time is estimated to be several months. The competition cannot be started before the verdict of the Market Court.

The initially planned starting date of the competition was September 19, 2011. There were totally 51 competitors from all over the world signed up for the competition, and ten of these were selected to the actual competition phase.

The “Kruunusillat” project is a planned bridge connection for tramway, bicycle and pedestrian traffic between the Kalasatama and Kruunuvuorenranta areas. The aim of the international bridge competition is to find the best solution in an environment that is extremely demanding when it comes to the landscape and both cultural and historical premises.

Decision taken by The City Council behind the bridge design competition

The organising of the bridge design competition is based on a decision taken by The City Council in November 12, 2008. The Council decided to choose a solution based upon tramway traffic and bridges as a foundation for the proceeding planning process. The solution also includes a reservation for an express tramway. As the project is extraordinary when it comes to its significance, challengability and scale, an international planning competition was launched.
